CAP Program

Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) – Helping You Repair or Retire Your Vehicle

At McWilliams & Walden, we proudly participate in California’s Consumer Assistance Program (CAP), offering eligible vehicle owners an opportunity to receive financial assistance for emission-related repairs or vehicle retirement. This program, managed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), aims to improve air quality by ensuring vehicles meet California's stringent emissions standards.

What is the Consumer Assistance Program?

CAP provides financial aid to qualifying vehicle owners in two ways:

  1. Repair Assistance: If your vehicle failed its biennial Smog Check inspection, you may be eligible for financial assistance to cover emission-related repairs at a state-approved Smog Check repair station (like ours!).
  2. Vehicle Retirement: If you choose to retire your high-emission vehicle, CAP offers an incentive to surrender your vehicle for dismantling and recycling, reducing pollution in California.

Who Qualifies for CAP Assistance?

Eligibility for the CAP program depends on income qualifications, vehicle type, and program funding availability. Participants must apply and be approved before receiving benefits.

Repair Assistance Eligibility

  • Your vehicle must have failed a Smog Check inspection.
  • You must meet income eligibility requirements OR be directed by the DMV to undergo a Smog Check.
  • You must take your vehicle to a state-approved CAP repair station (like McWilliams & Walden) for emissions-related repairs.
  • You may qualify for up to:
    • $1,450 in repair assistance for 1996 and newer vehicles.
    • $1,100 for 1976-1995 vehicles.

Vehicle Retirement Eligibility

  • Your vehicle must meet certain operational and ownership requirements (e.g., registration history, smog compliance).
  • The amount offered for vehicle retirement varies based on income eligibility.
  • Vehicle retirement is available at participating dismantlers across California.
